Art idea (need some tips & tutorials ^_^;)

Hello everyone who reads this.

I am planning on making a little traditional art piece for my real life friends but my art skills stink ^_^; so i was wondering if any of you have some tips or tutorial links that may help me.

Right here is the basic idea,
Me and my friends as pokemon, most likely as a picnic or something. For each of my friends im trying to pick out a pokemon that fits there personality

Me: Eevee : Fun loving but quiet

Max: Graveler? : He is strong willed, Nice, and has taken a lot in life (missing 30% of his right lung , got hit by a truck (2 years ago), has had to go through a lot of surgeries, lot lots more, but he always tries to keep a smile)

Steve: Butterfree? : Very smart, Loves nature (raises 100 quail every year and releases them into the wild), Quiet

Marla: Delcatty : Smart, funny, only girl in the 8 person group

Steven: Kadabra : Hes an Fing genius, he plans on working for NASA.

Preston: Elekid : hes a different kind of Fing genius, hes a computer genius, If any of you know the educational site Studtyisland, He made a program that would give him all the test answers just to see if he could(almost got it trouble at school for doing that but it was funny).

Zach: no idea : Hes a guitar player, a little emo, and he wants to be a lawyer. ( i was thinking a zubat as a lawyer joke)

Loren: Hitmonlee : Hes loves karate what else do i have to say :-P

Im going to try to put some of their traits on each of the pokemon.

So if you have any tips/tutorials for any of the pokemon or have any pokemon suggestions for the ones with (?) or zach's plz post it here.
